Life Lately: Happy Things

Time flies here in New York. Work makes the days go by relatively quickly and I spend my weekends either in hermit mode or out exploring. I still have so much more I want to see but I’m slowly ticking things off the list. Here areย some things that have made me happy lately :)

I recently finished drafting a chapter on refugees for the Yearbook. It was a really fulfilling experience as I got to learn more about the editorial process and delve into the UNHCR system. I also got to sit down with my boss for several hours and reformat the chapter, which was frustrating but exciting. I’m happy to draft more chapters if the opportunity comes along!

A few of my friends finished their internships and are moving onto other things, which is sad. Luckily I’ll remain in contact with them and can hopefully visit them one day at their various locations worldwide. Also, old interns leaving means new interns arriving! I’m excited to get to know my new colleagues and learn about where they come from.

My coworker Zekiye from Turkey can read fortunes with Turkish coffee, so we’ve gone out for Turkish food, coffee and baklava twice now so she can teach us about the food in Turkey and so she can read our fortunes (we are considering starting a business for her…). It’s a great time to get to know new people and learn the intimacies of their lives…

Now that I think about it, I’ve had some really good food experiences lately. Falafel at the Turkish restaurant, Korean BBQ, Italian, and much more. Thanks to the cosmopolitan nature of New York, there’s always good food to be found. (not to mention the delicious mini cinnamon rolls I bought at Whole Foods to treat myself)

The Great British Bakeoff is back! I fell in love with this show last year when I was feeling really down and am slowly working my way through older seasons whilst watching the new one. It’s so British and so lovely and gives me such baking envy. I thought I was pretty good at baking before watching this show, but I am nowhere near amateur. Plus, who doesn’t love Mary Berry?

I needed something to watch on Netflix to kill some time over Labour Day weekend and came across Heartland. I was a little skeptical at first, but I’ve grown to really like it.

My parents haveย been in town pretty often, so I’ve spent a lot of time with them eating yummy meals and exploring other parts of Manhattan. My dad and I took a long (10+ mile) walk through the city a few weeks ago and when my mom was in town we explored a bit of the Upper West Side. It’s great getting to know my new home and I can’t wait for the weather to cool down so I can actually be happy while outside exploring!
